About the Online Collection

The Online Collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden is the public reflection of the multi-year provenance research, registration and inventory project “Daphne” that was started in 2008 and is being financed by the government of the Free State of Saxony.

In a broad database, researchers of the museums of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden register and document the entire holdings of their collections. More than 1.2 million artworks – from the Sistine Madonna in the Gemäldegalerie to a Punch puppet in the Puppentheatersammlung, from the carved cherry stone in the Grünes Gewölbe to a celecstrial globe in the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon – are being compiled and scientifically evaluated. The artworks of the Dresden collections that have already been inventoried and have been released by researchers can be retrieved in the SKD Online Collection. For the first time, they become worldwide accessible.

With the help of the Art Explorer, a direct search for specific artworks in the SKD Online Collection is realized to discover something new and unknown. You will meet real treasures, whose originals can be admired in the museums or are not exhibited, but located in the storage facilities. The SKD Online Collection welcomes you to join specific tours developed by curators to set of travelling through the museums of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
