The British Museum drawing seems to be later, as it is more fully developed in both form and effects of light. On the other hand, the Virgin’s pose – with legs far apart – is further from the fresco than is the recto of the Dresden sheet. In either case, the order of execution of these studies is somewhat anomalous, which is not surprising, given Correggio’s exploratory freedom as a draughtsman.")
