An old era ends and a new one begins: the ruinous architecture as well as the arguing shepherds in the background belong to the age governed by the Law of Moses. With the birth of the Son of God, the new era of heavenly grace has begun. John the Baptist, seated at the feet of Mary and the infant Christ, holds a banner in his hands: “Ecce Agnus Dei” (“Behold the Lamb of God”). It refers to the Redeemer, who, through his crucifixion and resurrection, will sacrifice himself for the sins of the world.
