Schöpfer dieses als Reisealtärchen für die private Andacht bestimmten Triptychons ist Jan van Eyck, der bedeutendste Vertreter der altniederländischen Malerei. Charakteristisch für seine neuartige Kunst sind die miniaturhafte, äußerst realitätsnahe Detailschilderung sowie die leuchtende Farbigkeit. Im Zentrum einer Basilika thront die Mutter Gottes mit ihrem Sohn. Die lateinischen Worte auf dem Schriftband in der Hand Jesu "Folgt mir, denn ich bin sanftmütig und von Herzen demütig" sind direkt an den gläubigen Betrachter gerichtet.
Der rechte Flügel zeigt die Heilige Katharina mit Rad und Schwert, während links der Erzengel Michael sowie der unbekannte Stifter des Altars zu sehen sind.

The creator of this small triptych, a portable altar for private devotion, was Jan van Eyck, the most important representative of Early Netherlandish painting. Characteristic features of his innovative style are the miniature-like, exceptionally realistic representation of details, as well as the luminous colour tones. The Virgin and Child are enthroned in the centre of a basilica. The Latin phrase on a banderole in Jesus’s hand translates as "Follow me, for I am meek and lowly in heart" and directly addresses the worshipper.
The right wing depicts St Catherine with a wheel and sword, while the left wing bears depictions of Archangel Michael as well as the unidentified donor of the altarpiece.
