Ecce homo (behold the man): with these words Pilate presented the scourged Christ to the crowd. In this painting, however, the twisting figure of the Son of God is unscathed, and the torture instruments still lie on the ground. Here, the story of the Passion is subordinated to the dramatic posture of Christ’s body, which is characteristic of the Mannerist style. This was promoted primarily by the princely courts: Heintz, who trained in Italy, was a court painter to Emperor Rudolf II in Prague.
