Porträt eines Christusritters (Francisco de Andrade Leitão [vor 1600–1655]?)Velázquez, Diego (1599-1660) - Maler Leitão, Francisco de Andrade (-1655) ? - Dargestellte Person
Identifying the subject of this portrait is still extremely difficult. The man’s garments do at least show him to be a member of a chivalric order. The traces of red paint on his left shoulder suggest that he wore the badge of a Christian order of knights. Such orders began to be established from the start of the Crusades in the 11th century, their purpose being to protect pilgrims and the holy sites. The badge presumably represented the cross pattée of the Portuguese Order of Christ.
